Broadening Tree-Ring Analysis Beyond Dendrochronological Dating

Dendrochronology is traditionally associated with the dating of wooden objects through statistical crossdating of long tree-ring series against reference chronologies. While this approach has been extraordinarily successful, it also means that many wooden objects are considered unsuitable for analysis because they contain too few growth rings or lack the conditions required for conventional dating.

DendroScope is a framework that broadens the scope of tree-ring analysis beyond the binary distinction between "datable" and "not datable". Rather than focusing exclusively on absolute dating, DendroScope treats tree-ring information as a continuum of analytical potential.

When growth rings are visible, the next question is whether they can be measured. Even short ring-width sequences that are insufficient for conventional crossdating can contain meaningful information. Similarities and differences among sequences may reveal relationships among objects, manufacturing practices, timber selection strategies, or shared origins.

Where long and continuous ring-width series are available, conventional dendrochronological methods remain the preferred approach, allowing chronological dating and provenance studies.
